Blessing of the Build in Seaforth

April 24, 2010

(Seaforth) The rain held off and a sizeable crowd gathered at 152 Sparling Street in Seaforth for the "Blessing of the Build," at Habitat for Humanity Huron County's latest build site. Symbolic items presented by a variety of community groups reflected the spirit of hard work, dedication and volunteerism that has characterized Habitat's work in Huron County. Organizer and committee member Bruce Whitmore chaired the event, which included blessing prayers by local clergy as well as brief speeches by local politicians and Habitat volunteers.

This year's partner family, Murray and Kristin Ward and their son Rory, attended and spoke briefly to the crowd. The crowd then lined up and grabbed on to one of four ropes attached to a single furrow walking plow and began to pull, and thus the ground was broken for this year's build! The event symbolizes that the work of Habitat is accomplished by many people, all pulling in the same direction.

The response from the Seaforth community has been overwhelming and support for the project continues to grow. The Seaforth build will be the sixth house that Habitat for Humanity Huron County has built in Huron County. The organization continues with its ambitious agenda as it plans to open a second ReStore in Exeter in addition to the one now operating in Goderich. Next year, two houses are planned as Habitat carries out its mission to provide affordable housing to partner families.
