Huron County, Ontario – A local family’s dreams have come true. Winston and Nicole along with their two sons, ages 10 & 4 and one-year old daughter were welcomed into their new Habitat home with a special key dedication ceremony on Sunday, July 9 – a milestone celebration for the larger community.

Executive Director, Cheryl Jefferson says that, “Habitat for Humanity Huron County is about giving local families the opportunity to take the next step to stability and self-reliance in their financial future through affordable homeownership. The benefits of a place they call home expand into the community too.”
Unable to find affordable housing in Huron County, Winston, Nicole and their young family were previously living with parents. Habitat’s affordable homeownership program offered them an exciting opportunity to unlock new possibilities that previously did not exist.

Since 2005, 17 families have been positively impacted by Habitat Huron County’s mission to bring communities together to help families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership.

Through the National Housing Co-Investment Fund, a key component of the National Housing Strategy (NHS), the Government of Canada has invested $66,212 into this home, bringing Habitat for Humanity one-step closer to creating 1,117 new affordable homes across Canada.

In March 2023, the Government of Canada and Habitat for Humanity Canada announced a federal investment of $25 million to build 500 new affordable homes across Canada over the next three years. This new funding joins previous investments totaling $55.8 million in Habitat for Humanity through the Government of Canada’s National Housing Co-Investment Fund, which has supported the creation of 617 affordable housing units across the country since 2019. These previous investments include an initial investment of $32.4 million to create 417 homes in 2019, a top-up investment of $3.4 million in 2020, and a $20 million investment to support equitable access to homeownership for Black Canadian families announced in 2020.

Habitat for Humanity Huron County is a registered charity that believes that everyone has the right to a decent and affordable place to call home. The Homeownership Program requires families to complete 500 volunteer hours and to be able to pay an affordable mortgage based on income.

Habitat looks beyond the build. Statistically, Habitat families are healthier, rely less on social services, are more available for work and their children to do better socially and educationally. Along with its donors and volunteers, Habitat Huron County builds hope, creates a sense of belonging and a foundation for brighter futures.
